Background

About Piccola Napoli

The Story

Mario's project came to life in 2010, when, with his family's support, he opened the first Piccola Napoli in Madrid here on Calle de Palencia. The aim was to share the genuine flavours of his homeland through authentic Neapolitan pizza and pasta made from family recipes. Two more Piccola Napoli restaurants have followed, and the group also delivers through Uber Eats and Glovo.

The Cuisine

Neapolitan and southern Italian: pizzas in individual (25 cm) and medium (30 cm) sizes, fresh pasta and gnocchi, calzone, baked dishes and Neapolitan sweets. Gluten-free pasta (penne, fusilli or gnocchi) is available.

Pizza

The classics start with a marinara (€7.50) and margherita (€8.50), and run through capricciosa, napoletana with anchovies and capers, and quattro stagioni. The 'tentazioni' are the house specials: Bella Roma with pumpkin and truffle cream, smoked provola and black-pepper pancetta; San Gennaro with Napoli salami and ricotta; Garibaldi with stracciatella and pesto; and a Burratina with 'nduja and burrata (€19.50, medium only). There's a white-based list too, including salsiccia e friarielli with sausage and greens, a mortadella with pistachio cream and buffalo mozzarella, and a truffled boletus pizza.

Pasta, Starters and Dolci

Starters include focaccia, a board of Italian cured meats and cheeses, Pugliese burrata, mussel soup, bresaola carpaccio and smoked provola baked in San Marzano tomato. Pastas cover spaghetti carbonara and amatriciana with guanciale and pecorino, puttanesca, aglio e olio with Neapolitan tarallo, tagliatelle with porcini and white truffle, and gnocchi alla sorrentina; from the oven come a beef lasagne and an aubergine parmigiana. Desserts are €6: tiramisù, torta della mamma with ricotta and chocolate, panna cotta, pistachio cheesecake, Sicilian cannoli and a Neapolitan pastiera.

Menú del Día and Hours

Monday to Friday at lunch, not on holidays, the €13.50 menu gets you an individual pizza or pasta, a drink and dessert or coffee, with a salad for €1.50 more. The Palencia branch opens Monday to Saturday for lunch (13:00 to 16:15) and dinner (20:00 to 23:15, or 23:30 on Friday and Saturday) and closes on Sunday; the other two branches close on Sunday and Monday. Book by phone.

Getting There

Calle de Palencia 29, in the Cuatro Caminos area of the Tetuán district. The two newer branches are at Calle de Cristóbal Bordiu 5 in Chamberí and Calle de López de Hoyos 202.

Nearby

Cuatro Caminos is a busy northern junction with a genuinely local eating scene underneath the traffic. The rooms are unpretentious and well priced, and the cooking travels further than the setting suggests. Estadio Santiago Bernabéu and Faro de Moncloa are the landmarks in view.
