Background

About Mi Dang

The Story

Mi Dang means 'the home of delights' in traditional Korean, a name chosen by its owners, a Korean married couple who moved to Spain in 1989. After more than forty years of cooking these recipes at home, and now in their seventies, they opened the restaurant to fulfil a long-held wish to serve the food of Jeolla-do, in their words Korea's culinary province par excellence. It holds a Solete in the Guía Repsol, which praises its home cooking and its warmth.

The Cuisine

Korean home cooking: hot-stone bibimbap, kimchi and soybean-paste stews, japchae glass noodles, bulgogi, spicy stir-fried pork and seafood pancakes. Mains arrive with traditional side dishes, and the kimchi is made in the house. Every dish contains soy sauce, so most carry some gluten.

What to Order

The Guía Repsol points to the dolsot bibimbap, the jeyuk bokkeum, the bulgogi tteokbokki and the mandu. The bibimbap arrives sizzling in a hot stone bowl, rice topped with sautéed vegetables, beef and an egg, with miso soup on the side. Jeyuk bokkeum is thin-sliced pork belly in the house chilli and soy sauce with garlic, onion and sesame oil. Starters include fried pork and vegetable mandu, a crisp seafood pancake with squid and prawns, a kimchi pancake made with the house's well-aged kimchi, and seaweed salads, and several mains, like the table pork belly, are portioned for two.

Set Lunch, Drinks and Takeaway

On weekday lunchtimes (Monday to Friday, not on public holidays) there's a menú del día of starter, main, drink and dessert for €13. To drink there's soju and makgeolli by the bottle, Korean sake, beer and house wine; desserts are sweet rice cakes filled with red bean paste, with ginseng tea or Korean green tea with brown rice. Orders can be collected or delivered through third-party couriers.

Hours and Booking

Mi Dang serves lunch and dinner Monday to Saturday and closes on Sunday. The kitchen takes its last orders at 15:30 and 22:30. Bookings are by phone only.

Experience

Mi Dang Dining Experience

Small, warm and personal: the owners describe it as being like your own living room, and service is close and friendly. Every main comes with Korean side dishes, and some dishes are built for sharing between two. It's an everyday Korean kitchen rather than a fine-dining one.
