Masa Naomi is a family-run Japanese restaurant on Calle de Ávila, between Bravo Murillo and the AZCA business district, open since 1974; Madrid's official tourism site calls it the city's oldest Japanese restaurant. Lunch and dinner Tuesday to Saturday.

Background

About Masa Naomi

The Story

Masa Naomi opened in 1974, and Madrid's official tourism site describes it as the oldest Japanese restaurant in the city. It's run by a family and cooks traditional, home-style Japanese food, and it has kept the format of a small Tokyo eating house, with a sushi bar and tatami seating, through five decades.

The Cuisine

Traditional Japanese home cooking: yakitori and grilled chicken skin, tempura, aubergine dengaku, miso soup and chazuke, udon and soba hot or cold, curry rice, donburi such as unagidon, katsudon and tendon, and sashimi and nigiri up to O-toro.

The Carta

The numbered carta starts with izakaya plates: yakitori (€6.40), torikawa chicken skin, squid tempura, mixed or prawn tempura, nasu dengaku, ohitashi, asparagus with miso, agedashi tofu, wakame salad, takuan pickles, natto with squid or tuna, and motsuni offal stew. Noodles include tanuki udon and soba and cold zaru udon and soba (€10.90 each) plus soba curry. Rice dishes run from hamachidon and unagidon (€19.90) to katsudon, tendon, teriyaki, curry rice and katsu curry. The raw fish is sold as sashimi, from salmon (€11.80) and an assortment (€19.90) to O-toro tuna belly (€29.95), or as nigiri by the piece, maki, temaki and chirashi-style bowls such as oyakodon and tekkadon.

Drinks

Asahi and Kirin are €4.30, and sake comes in small jugs, hot or at room temperature. The short wine list covers a house Crianza, Luis Cañas Rioja, Ribera del Duero from Emilio Moro and Pago de Carraovejas, and whites from Rueda, Albariño and Godello.
