Miki is the Japanese restaurant of itamae Hiroo Miki, on Calle Duque de Sevilla in El Viso. Born in Osaka into a restaurant family, he came to Madrid in 1992, cooked at Janatomo, Ginza and Miyama Flor Baja, and opened his own place in 2014. The carta mixes traditional and modern Japanese cooking, from sashimi and nigiri to miso-marinated black cod, with a set lunch on weekdays.

Background

About Miki

The Story

Hiroo Miki was born in Osaka, where his family ran a restaurant, and he worked in it from a young age. He moved to Madrid in 1992 and cooked in the kitchens of Janatomo, Ginza and Miyama Flor Baja, with a spell at Zuberoa in Gipuzkoa in between, where he learned Basque technique and dishes. In 2014 he opened his eponymous restaurant, to serve traditional Japanese cooking in a personal, relaxed way.

The Cuisine

Japanese cooking that's traditional and modern at once, built on Japanese technique and very fresh Spanish and Japanese produce. The 2025 carta runs from spicy tuna tartare and sunomono with smoked eel to agedashi aubergine with prawns, yakitori and karaage; from the grill and fryer come salmon teriyaki, gindara (Alaskan black cod marinated in sweet miso), mixed tempura and sardine tempura wrapped in shiso with plum paste.

Sashimi and Sushi

Sashimi comes as full or half portions: a chef's selection of three or five fish (€30 or €44), bluefin, toro, hamachi, white fish, a thin usuzukuri, and tatakis of tuna or hamachi with ponzu. Nigiri are sold in pairs, from €7 for amaebi to €14 for toro, with scallop, eel, ikura, marinated mackerel and a smoked special; there are also hosomaki, eight-piece special makis, temakis and an eight-piece chef's nigiri selection (€30).

Lunch and Drinks

At lunch there's a daily set menu so you can eat here at a gentler price. To drink there are several sakes by the small jar or bottle, among them Kubota Daiginjo, Taisetsu, Shichida, Akitora and Rai, and Japanese beers like Kirin, Asahi and Sapporo. Desserts include daifuku, a homemade cake and green tea, black sesame or red bean ice cream.

Small and calm, with the attention on the food and the itamae at work. It's a neighbourhood Japanese for El Viso as much as a destination.
