Background

About Los Montes de Galicia

The Story

José Espasandín, who started out washing dishes in Madrid restaurants, opened Los Montes de Galicia in 1997, first as a neighbourhood restaurant, building the menu on his grandmother's recipes. He has since hung up his apron and handed the running of the restaurant to his son, Daniel Espasandín.

The Cuisine

The kitchen is traditional Galician, described on its own site as alta gastronomía tradicional, with seafood, octopus and oven-cooked meats at its core.

The Room and the Cocktail Bar

The space is split in two: the dining room and a cocktail bar for an aperitivo, a light bite or after-work drinks, with a big selection of spirits and, honouring the Galician roots, good orujos and signature cocktails. Natural light, hanging plants and motifs drawn from Sargadelos ceramics nod to Galicia, set against iron, wood, steel and glass.

From the Sea and the Hills

The carta is split between 'del mar', fish and shellfish as the base of Galician tradition, and 'del monte', meats and cured meats. The chef's favourites are cod buñuelos, a timbal of txangurro, black-bellied monkfish, pulpo á feira, secreto and pluma ibérica, salmon in a rice cream and, to finish, filloas and Galician cheesecake. Starters run from caldo gallego 'as in my village' to a sardine empanada and croquetas of cecina and San Simón cheese.

Set Menus

For the restaurant's 29th anniversary there's a Menú Select with shared starters (tiradito, bluefin tuna belly carpaccio, cod buñuelos, pulpo á la gallega), a choice of main from Burela hake lasagne to monkfish a la bilbaína, 40-day-aged Black Angus or a Wagyu burger, dessert, wine by the bottle, unlimited soft drinks and coffee and a glass of Galician MIÑA gin. There are also closed menus for groups and communions.
