Background
About China Crown
The Story
The first China Crown opened in Madrid in 1981, when Spanish diners were only just starting to take an interest in Asian food, and María Li Bao was running it by the age of 24. That restaurant later closed. The name came back as the family's group grew: first in Barcelona, in Gaudí's Casa Calvet, then in Madrid, where this China Crown opened on Calle de Don Ramón de la Cruz in autumn 2020.
The Cuisine
Beyond the Pato Imperial and the txangurro xiao long bao, the kitchen turns out sui mai with turkey, shiitake and chives, an imperial dim sum soup built on shark fin, red prawn and txangurro, and a version of xiao long bao filled with oxtail. A daily 5 to 8pm service pairs fifteen dim sum choices with champagne or gin tonics.
The Chef
The Team
Siblings María Li Bao and Felipe Bao, the second generation of the Bao family in hospitality, run China Crown: she leads the business side of the group, and he runs the kitchen as head chef.

Recoletos runs along the grand boulevards between Plaza de Cibeles and Puerta de Alcalá, where the buildings are stately and the pavements are wide. The eating leans formal and expense-account, with classic dining rooms sitting beside newer, sharper kitchens. It shades into Salamanca as you go east, and the prices follow.
