Background

About Maitea

The Story

Maitea is a casual Basque taberna in l'Antiga Esquerra de l'Eixample, named after the founders' mother Maite, a Donostiarra who settled in Barcelona as a young woman and passed her love of Basque gastronomy onto her children. The restaurant sits between París and Còrsega streets, very close to the Hospital Clínic, and operates with a long bar for pintxos plus a separate dining room.

The Cuisine

The kitchen draws from Basque txokos, taverns, sidrerías, asadores and traditional amona recipes. Weekly deliveries include txistorra from Arbizu, cheeses from Uitzi, guindillas from Ibarra, vegetables from Navarra, Lodosa peppers, blood sausage from Beasain, latxa sheep's milk from Ultzama, Burgos chops, and butifarra from Cal Rovira. The carta covers hot and cold pintxos, tapas to share, wood-fired txuletón made with rubia gallega, seafood including hake Donosti style, and a rotating seasonal menu built around Maresme peas, Navarra asparagus, El Prat artichokes and Gernika peppers.

The Team

Maitea is family-run, with the founders continuing the Basque culinary traditions taught to them by their mother Maite. All desserts are prepared in-house by pastry chef Esteve Daura.
