Opened in 1959 by Andrés Iborra and Carmen Vicente, who brought the rice cookery of their native Elche to a corner site on Carrer de Vila i Vilà. The kitchen built its reputation on Valencian-Alicantino arroces: arroz a banda, arroz negro, paella with costra, and rice casseroles with lobster.

Background

About Elche

The Story

In 1959 the Iborra-Vicente family, Andrés Iborra and Carmen Vicente, both from Elche in Alicante, opened a bar-restaurant in Poble Sec, on the corner of Carrer de Vila i Vilà. Early regulars were artists and performers from the Paral·lel theatres; fellow ilicitanos began asking Carmen to cook the classic rices of her home region, and the kitchen reoriented around paellas and arroces levantinos. Over six decades the restaurant stayed in the family, with sons Eduardo and Andrés progressively taking over the business.

The Cuisine

The menu is anchored in Valencian-Alicantino rice cookery: paella de marisco, paella mixta, arroz a banda with prawns and crayfish, the house arroz negro with small squid and artichokes, caldoso with lobster, arroz con costra, and a fideuà-style rossejat de fideos. Around the rices sit Catalan and Spanish standards, escalivada, pan con tomate, Ibérico bellota ham, Cantábrico anchovies, Galician clams and cockles, cod samfaina, grilled sole and sea bass, Rubia Gallega veal, and slow-roasted kid.

The Team

The restaurant is operated by the Iborra family under the Iborra Restaurants umbrella (which also runs Cheriff on Carrer Ginebra). Day-to-day the kitchen and dining room are led by founders' sons Eduardo and Andrés Iborra, continuing the rice-centric cooking Carmen Vicente established in the 1960s.
