Background
About Casa Fernández
The Story
Casa Fernandez opened in May 1989 on Carrer de Santalo, originally under the name Real Compania Cervecera Casa Fernandez. It is named in tribute to the mother of founder Javier de las Muelas, and was conceived as a house where conversation and food sit at the heart of the room. The restaurant helped carry the tapas tradition, then concentrated in the seafront districts, up to the upper part of Barcelona. 37 years on, it still trades on the same idea: a place to sit at the bar or the table and eat well without complications.
The Cuisine
The kitchen serves a long roster of tapas, platillos and larger plates built around market produce. Signatures include tortillita de camarones, tataki de atun Balfego, arros del senyoret, patatas bravas, croquetas de jamon iberico, gambas al ajillo, steak tartar of Wagyu prepared tableside, bacalao a la llauna, rodaballo a la donostiarra and cochinillo iberico con setas. Jamon iberico 100% de bellota is cut to order, and the Chateaubriand is served for two. A short dessert list runs from flan del tio Pablo to a two-person souffle Alaska.
The Team
Casa Fernandez was founded by Javier de las Muelas, a long-standing figure in Barcelona hospitality better known for the Dry Martini cocktail bar. Reservations are handled through the drymartiniorg.com email domain, reflecting that connection. The Casa Fernandez website does not name a head chef; the bar and kitchen are run as a single team across service.
