Background

About Brugarol Barcelona

The Story

Brugarol Barcelona was created by chef Angelo Scirocco and Victoria, owner of the Brugarol farm in Palamós, Empordà. Scirocco, a fifth-generation chef born in South Africa, trained at La Colombe (ranked #11 in the world in 2010 by San Pellegrino) under Luke Dale Roberts before deepening his knowledge of Japanese-French cuisine and opening Urbanologi in Cape Town. At the Brugarol farm he found his calling: cooking with the produce, cheese, sobrasada, wine, made on the property. The Barcelona restaurant translates that farm-to-table philosophy into an intimate tapas counter with Japanese technique at its heart.

The Cuisine

Brugarol Barcelona defines itself as a 'tapas bar with the soul of a Japanese izakaya.' Chef Scirocco combines Japanese techniques with Mediterranean ingredients, many sourced from the family farm in Palamós, delivering dishes rooted in traditional Catalan and Spanish cooking with a Japanese sensibility. The menu changes with the seasons, and Michelin inspectors recommend watching each dish being prepared from the counter.

The Team

Brugarol Barcelona is led by chef Angelo Scirocco, a fifth-generation chef whose career spans La Colombe (Cape Town), The Test Kitchen (internationally recognised), and work alongside Liam Tomlin across Southeast Asian cuisine. In 2015 he won the San Pellegrino Africa & Middle East award and cooked in Milan for Grant Achatz, Massimo Bottura, Gastón Acurio, and Yannick Alléno. His partnership with Victoria and the Brugarol farm brought him to Palamós and ultimately to Barcelona, where the restaurant has earned Michelin Guide selection and a Google rating of 4.8 from over 1,100 reviews.
