Background

About Es Balcó de Son Vida

The Story

Es Balcó de Son Vida is the restaurant of Castillo Hotel Son Vida, a 13th-century estate hotel on a hilltop above Palma. It opened on 23 April 2026, replacing the hotel's previous restaurant, Es Castell, after a full renovation of the dining room by design studio EMCI, using wood, linen, terrazzo and marble. The space includes a terrace for outdoor dining and a winter garden with floor-to-ceiling windows that can be opened fully in warm weather, so the room looks over Palma and its bay whether it's set up open-air or enclosed. It's an adults-only space, open to outside diners as well as hotel guests.

The Cuisine

The kitchen cooks Mediterranean food built around a contemporary Mallorcan identity: seasonal produce with Mallorcan designation of origin, and traditional island recipes reworked with modern technique. Dinner is served à la carte, with sections for starters, a Mediterranean raw selection, rice and pasta, fish and farm-to-table dishes, alongside two tasting menus of five and seven courses. Breakfast is also served daily. Confirm current dishes, formats and pricing with the restaurant, as hotel restaurant menus change seasonally.

The Team

Chef David Méndez was born in Madrid and has lived in Mallorca for 25 years. He worked at the five-star Cap Rocat hotel before joining Castillo Hotel Son Vida in late 2024, and earlier trained at DINS by Santi Taura in its original Lloseta location, a formative influence he has cited for his focus on traditional Mallorcan recipes, seasonality and local, sustainably sourced produce. He has won the annual Oleotapa competition.
