Background

About Bodega La Rambla

The Story

Bodega La Rambla is an old-school tavern on Via Roma, at the north end of La Rambla in central Palma, that has served tapas and variats since 1940, per its own branding ("Variats y Tapas desde 1940"). As the restaurant's own site tells it, the tapa itself traces back to a story about King Alfonso XIII being served a sherry with a slice of ham laid over the glass to keep out blowing sand, a gesture he liked enough to ask for again on his next drink. Whatever the tapa's true origin, this bodega has kept the same format for over eight decades: a wood-toned dining room for sit-down lunches, and a long bar out front where locals grab a quick variat standing up. It does not take table reservations except for private events.

The Cuisine

The kitchen's specialty is the variat mallorquí, a shared platter that combines several classic tapas on one plate. Its own printed menu spells out set combinations: De la casa (octopus fritters, the house "ensaladilla La Rambla," hake, fried calamari, pica-pica, breaded vegetables and mushrooms), a Clàssic, an all-fried De rebozados, a meat-forward Fora Vila with a choice of two meats, a Vegetariano built around mushrooms, ensaladilla, Spanish tortilla and breaded vegetables, and an A tu gusto build-your-own version. Every variat comes in small (P) or large (G) size. Diners can also order any tapa à la carte, from meatballs in tomato sauce and kidneys in sherry to fried calamari, breaded hake and cold tapas like boquerones in vinegar.

The Team

Bodega La Rambla is family-run and has traded under the same name on Via Roma since 1940. Its own site and social pages don't name a current head chef or owner, and Guidavera hasn't independently confirmed further ownership detail beyond what the business itself publishes.
