Santuari de Sant Salvador

A fortified hilltop sanctuary above the town of Artà, on a site known during Arab rule (10th-13th century) as the Almudaina, or fortress. Its one-metre-thick defensive wall with nine towers, including the main Sant Miquel tower, dates to the 14th century and was built to protect the town from pirate and other attacks; the baroque pilgrimage church inside was built in 1832. A 180-step staircase, the Via Crucis, links the parish church in town below up to the sanctuary on Calvary Hill.
