Castell de Capdepera

A walled hilltop fortress in Capdepera, in Mallorca's northeast, where James II of Aragon ordered the construction of a fortified village in 1300, replacing an earlier watchtower used to guard the coast. It is one of the largest castles on the island and was the site where James I signed a treaty leading to Menorca's surrender. The castle was garrisoned by troops until 1854, then privately owned until it was donated to Capdepera's town council in 1983 and opened to visitors.
