Villa Verbena opened in 2021 on the lake in Casa de Campo, one of the kiosk concessions the city awarded to revive the lakeside, and it's a joint project of Grupo Triciclo and The Hat Madrid. Across a big open-air terrace and a glass-and-wood pavilion by the water, it serves Triciclo-style sharing plates and grilled meat and fish, with views of the Royal Palace and the Almudena cathedral. It holds a Solete in the Guía Repsol; expect about €40 to €65 a head à la carte.

Background

About Villa Verbena

The Story

Villa Verbena came out of the city's competition to renew the kiosks around the Casa de Campo lake; the partnership between The Hat Madrid and Grupo Triciclo was one of three winners, and the restaurant opened in 2021. The founding menu was designed by Triciclo's Javier Mayor, Javier Goya and David Alfonso, pitched halfway between the castizo cooking of Taberna La Elisa and the grill of Sua. Today Javier Goya is Triciclo's sole partner, and the group runs Villa Verbena alongside Triciclo, Taberna La Elisa and Sua by Triciclo.

The Cuisine

Honest, seasonal Spanish cooking where the product leads, with almost everything sized to share and the grill driving most main courses. Triciclo classics such as the steak tartare with eggs and roe and the canelón de rabo de toro sit alongside tavern staples and a list of charcoal-grilled meat and fish.

The Carta

To start: ensaladilla with house escabeche, gordal olive and picos, croquetas, torreznos, patatas bravas, huevos rotos with garlic prawns, Madrid-style callos, and a canelón de rabo de toro with cheese sauce and pecorino. Vegetables get their own space, from fire-roasted aubergine with curry and yogurt to confit leeks, artichokes with romesco and crisp ham, and tomato with Ibérico ham, and there's a bluefin tuna toast with avocado and corn. From the grill come skirt steak, lomo bajo with chips, a Discarlux beef chop, wild sea bass with refrito and panadera potatoes, monkfish and, in season, sardines. Desserts include an Asturian-style caramelised rice pudding, a creamy cheesecake with red-berry ice cream and grilled pineapple with ice cream and crème anglaise.

Brunch, Hours and Booking

At weekends there's a brunch in the morning. Hours change with the season: currently it opens every day from 13:00, closing at 20:00 from Sunday to Wednesday, at midnight on Thursday and at 01:00 on Friday and Saturday, with longer summer evenings on the terrace. Book online or by email.

Experience

Villa Verbena Dining Experience

Casual and festive, as the name suggests, taking its cue from Madrid's verbenas. By day it's lunch in the covered wooden and glass pavilion a few metres from the lake; on summer nights it's candlelit dinners and cocktails on the garden terrace, with the palace and cathedral lit up across the water. There are low tables for a proper meal and high tables for grazing.
