El Urogallo is the first restaurant of the Asturian family behind Grupo Urogallo, opened in 1996 inside the Casa de Campo, by the park's lake. The kitchen keeps to traditional Asturian home cooking in generous portions, with meats, fish, a wine list, and tapas and raciones from a separate picoteo carta. There's a terrace over the lake and a climate-controlled glass-fronted room built for family lunches. It opens every day.

Background

About El Urogallo

The Story

El Urogallo's roots go back to 1950, when Joaquín González and Engracia Rodríguez opened the Bar Cangas in Legazpi, serving Asturian food to market traders; they later ran more bars, including Las Moreras in Casa de Campo from 1974. In 1996 their sons Miguel and Joaquín, with cousins Marcelino and José, took over Las Moreras and turned it into the first El Urogallo, a proper restaurant with grills at the table, in a glass-fronted house of old brick and Arab tile built to recall Asturias. The group has since opened in Florida, Pozuelo, Majadahonda and Chamberí, and runs the Taberna El Urogallo Lago next door.

The Cuisine

Traditional Asturian cooking with simple home recipes and generous portions, as the house puts it, 'we're Asturian, we don't skimp'. Meats, fish and a run of tapas and raciones to share.

El Urogallo Dining Experience

The setting does the work here: a terrace over the lake and a climate-controlled salon, far enough into the park that the city noise drops away. It's built for unhurried family lunches and dinners rather than a quick bite.
