Mawey on Calle de Olid is one of four taco bars from chefs Fernando Carrasco and Julián Barros, who started the brand in Madrid in 2017. The cooking crosses Mexican recipes with Spanish produce, from tacos of oreja and sepia with habanero to oxtail quesadillas with Gamoneu cheese, with cocktails and micheladas. It's a minute from Plaza de Olavide.

Background

About Mawey

The Story

Mawey was born in 2017 from chefs Fernando Carrasco and Julián Barros, and now runs four taco bars: San Bernardo by Gran Vía, this one on Calle de Olid in Chamberí, López de Hoyos and Majadahonda, plus a food truck. The idea is a 'gastronomic taquería': Mexican cooking, which UNESCO lists as intangible cultural heritage, made with seasonal Spanish produce and traditional recipes adapted and evolved, in a casual room with original cocktails.

The Cuisine

Mexican-Spanish fusion built around tacos, served two to an order and meant for sharing. The carta runs from homemade guacamole, a yellow ceviche with passion-fruit leche de tigre and cochinita pibil enchiladas to tacos al pastor, duck carnitas with mole manchamanteles, Baja-style fish with a Cádiz adobo, crisp chopitos with a mussel escabeche sauce and wagyu brisket with sweetcorn cream. Almost all of it is gluten-free.

How to Order

This isn't a starter-and-main place: the house suggests grouping tacos of the same kind and sharing across the table, with a choice of hot sauces. Tacos come two to a plate at roughly €9 to €13.50, among them the 'Gober' (sautéed prawns, Oaxaca cheese, kikos dust and ancho chile), oreja and sepia with habanero (€9.10), bife campechano with Reblochon and a quail egg, and pork belly glazed with chipotle and tamarind. Quesadillas include huitlacoche with Oaxaca cheese and oxtail with three chiles and Gamoneu.

Drinks and Gluten-Free

Micheladas are made with beer imported from Mexico, alongside margaritas, other cocktails, mezcal and tequila shots and aguas frescas. Most of the carta is gluten-free and many dishes with gluten can be adapted, but the kitchen is shared, so traces can't be ruled out. Desserts include tres leches cake.

Practicalities

Open Tuesday to Sunday from 13:30, to midnight (23:00 on Sunday), and closed Mondays. The house keeps some tables for walk-ins but recommends booking; call 910 11 71 03 or email reservas@restaurantemawey.es.

The Chefs

Fernando Carrasco, Julián Barros

The Team

Fernando Carrasco trained at Madrid's Escuela Superior de Hostelería y Turismo and cooked at Piñera, Loft 39 and the Michelin-starred Punto MX. Julián Barros earned Le Cordon Bleu's Grand Diplôme and cooked at Fernando Pérez Arellano's Zaranda and, in Paris, at Apicius and La Grande Cascade.

Getting There

Calle de Olid 6, in the Trafalgar barrio of Chamberí, about a minute from Plaza de Olavide; Quevedo and Bilbao are the nearest metro stations.

Nearby

Trafalgar is the calm shoulder between Malasaña and the wider avenues, residential enough to feel lived-in and central enough to walk out of. The eating skews to neighbourhood favourites and small confident kitchens rather than destinations. It gets quieter, and better value, the further you go from Gran Vía.
