Background

About La Castañal

The Story

La Castañal has been working since the 1960s as a popular neighbourhood bar with a Galician kitchen, and today the third generation of the family runs it. It describes its cooking as authentic traditional Galician food, and has built its name on quality Galician shellfish at fair prices. It holds a Solete in the Guía Repsol.

The Cuisine

Traditional Galician cooking centred on seafood: nécoras and other shellfish, caldo gallego, empanada de berberechos, merluza de pincho a la gallega, hake cogote, and turbot a la gallega or a la espalda.

What to Order

Start with a bowl of caldo gallego and a slice of cockle empanada, then move on to shellfish: the nécoras, velvet swimming crabs, are among the dishes the Guía Repsol recommends. For a main, the hake is line-caught (merluza de pincho), served a la gallega with potatoes and paprika oil, or as a whole cogote, the meaty head piece; turbot comes a la gallega or a la espalda, opened and finished with garlic and chilli oil. Seafood is priced by the day, so ask before ordering.

Hours and Booking

La Castañal opens Tuesday to Saturday for lunch (13:30 to 17:30) and dinner (20:30 to 00:30), and on Sunday for lunch only; it's closed on Monday. Bookings are taken by phone on 913 11 52 02.
