Background
About Hijo del Maíz
The Story
Hijo del Maiz is a Mexican antojeria in the Chamartin district of Madrid, near the top of the Castellana. It belongs to a small Madrid group that also runs Hijo del Maiz Parrilla, a grill-led sibling, so the name comes in two formats around the city.
The Cuisine
The cooking is Mexican, in the antojeria mould, tacos and antojitos, the informal, snack-led side of the tradition. The Parrilla sibling adds a grill and a longer menu, but this one is the taco-first version.
The Menu
Tacos come two to a plate: cochinita in achiote with pickled red onion (€7.90), tinga, chilorio, birria with its own broth (€9.90), pastor with pineapple, carnitas confited in their own lard, suadero and beef tongue, plus quesadillas you can fill with cochinita, squash flower, pastor or huitlacoche. To start there's a guacamole with radish and bits of torrezno (€13.50), nachos with chili con carne, aguachile of prawns and a shrimp cóctel; to follow, sopa azteca, pozole with pork (€16.20), enchiladas and chilaquiles. The house pitches it as a place to share, toast and celebrate, with mezcalitas for birthdays and groups of friends.

Hijo del Maíz Dining Experience
Hijo del Maíz keeps the casual, snack-led end of Mexican eating near the top of the Castellana in Chamartín, tacos and antojitos rather than a formal sit-down. Its grill-led sibling, Hijo del Maíz Parrilla, handles the longer meal elsewhere in the city, leaving this room the taco-first, antojería version of the concept.
