Background

About El Pescador

The Story

El Pescador is the restaurant and marisquería of Pescaderías Coruñesas, opened in 1975 to serve the best of the fishmonger's catch. Its founding idea, credited to Evaristo García, was a small revolution in Madrid at the time: recommend fish without sauces, dressings or even lemon, because the quality of the produce speaks for itself. That has been the house signature ever since. In 2010 the restaurant was refurbished to give the bar a bigger role without losing the original idea. It's listed as Recomendado in the Guía Repsol.

The Cuisine

Seafood, served plainly. The kitchen's stated principle is minimal intervention, so the fish arrives without sauce or dressing and the quality is what you're judging. Sourcing runs through Pescaderías Coruñesas.

The Carta

Everything is wild and fresh, delivered daily by Pescaderías Coruñesas. To share: tomato salad with bonito belly (€18), Motril quisquillas in tempura, jigged baby squid, pulpo a la gallega, carabinero croquetas, Almadraba tuna tartare, spider-crab ensaladilla, Carril clams, a runny tortilla with garlic prawns, a tiradito of the day's fish and fried eggs with caviar. Mains are the fish, cooked as you like it (grilled, baked, a la bilbaína, a la romana, in salsa verde or fried whole): hake, wild turbot, hake cocochas, sole, a 'Lenguado Evaristo' for two and Cantabrian grouper, mostly €27 to €43. The shellfish is sold by weight, from Galician velvet crab and ría spider crab to Sanlúcar prawns, Cantabrian lobster and spiny lobster, Huelva white prawns, Marín langoustines, carabineros, Dénia red prawns and Galician percebes, plus O Grove and Fine de Claire oysters and a house platter for two at €95 a head.

Bar, Terrace and Restaurant

The bar and terrace serve non-stop from 12:30 to 00:30, Monday to Saturday, with their own carta of picoteo and shellfish, including house escabeche bonito, salpicón, Santoña anchovies and Pescaderías Coruñesas' own smoked salmon. The restaurant keeps set lunch and dinner services. There's valet parking, and bookings go only through the restaurant's website or phone, by phone for eight or more.
