Background
About Alduccio
The Story
Alduccio's story starts in 1957, when founder Aldo Sebastianelli brought pizza to Madrid in a small place on Calle Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada, behind Gran Vía. Americans living in Madrid, who already knew pizza, asked for more, and an Alduccio followed at the Torrejón de Ardoz base; in 1962 he opened the Ristorante Alduccio by the Santiago Bernabéu, which his children now run. The restaurant bills itself as the first Italian in Madrid, and its guests have included Sophia Loren, Claudia Cardinale, Mikhail Baryshnikov and Alfredo Di Stéfano, who the family says ate the fettuccine, lasagna or gnocchi every Friday.
The Cuisine
The kitchen keeps to traditional Italian cooking: handmade fresh pasta made the way the Italian mammas did at home (fettuccine, lasagna and gnocchi), alongside pizza.
Pasta and Pizza
The fresh pasta, 'fatta in casa', is made by hand every day: fettuccine Alduccio (€16.50), fettuccine with porcini and truffle, lasagna alla napoletana, ravioli alla parmigiana, pumpkin or ricotta-and-spinach tortelloni, gnocchi with gorgonzola, carbonara with guanciale and free-range eggs, spaghetti alle vongole and a porcini-and-truffle risotto, with gluten-free pasta on request. The pizza dough ferments for up to 72 hours, for a margherita (€14.50), a romana with anchovies, a capricciosa, the house Alduccio with mozzarella, gorgonzola and parmigiano, or the Mamina with spicy salame and a free-range egg.
To Share and the Mains
Sharing plates include focaccia with Parma ham, vitello tonnato, burrata with truffle oil, baked provolone with oregano, Tudela artichoke flowers, aubergine parmigiana and a fritto of prawns and squid. Meat runs from a beef carpaccio to cotoletta alla milanese and an entrecôte aglio e olio, and there's fish too. Bread and aperitivo are €2.50 a head. In 2022 the restaurant celebrated its 60th anniversary.

El Viso is a pocket of low houses and gardens that feels nothing like the city around it, and the cooking matches its seclusion. The rooms here are serious, small and largely unknown to visitors. Estadio Santiago Bernabéu and Salamanca are the nearest points of reference.
