Background

About Circolo Popolare

The Story

Circolo Popolare is part of Big Mamma, the Paris-born group behind Italian restaurants across Europe, with sister Circolos in Barcelona, Berlin, London and Manchester. The Madrid room sits under Torre Picasso and was designed by Studio Kiki, the group's in-house design studio in London. Bookings are online only, opening 30 days ahead from 09:00, and walk-ins are welcome, best at the start of service.

The Cuisine

Italian, with everything made in-house and much of the produce sourced from small producers in Italy: Neapolitan pizzas, fresh pasta, antipasti for sharing and a few grilled secondi. The group says 70% of its dishes are vegetarian.

The Room

The space runs to roughly 760 to 800 square metres over two floors. On the ground floor, two communal tables for about 30 people sit beside an open bar, among Saarinen-inspired furniture, Olivetti artworks, 1950s Domus magazines and a 'CIAO' sign rescued from a 1970s theatre on Procida. Upstairs, more than 2,000 vintage bottles glow along the walls, an open kitchen puts the chefs on show, and more than 200 metres of leopard-print fabric covers floors, chairs and banquettes. In the warmer months a flower-lined terrace opens outside.

What to Order

The kitchen's calling cards are crispy Neapolitan pizzas, including the Queen Rosalia, fresh pasta served straight from the cheese wheel, and secondi such as a chicken skewer marinated in yogurt and lemon and a grilled 350g rib steak with crispy potatoes and béarnaise, which the restaurant pairs with a Sicilian Nero d'Avola. Antipasti include stracciatella, truffle-béchamel prosciutto croquetas, gnocco fritto with mortadella and Parma ham, and parmigiana di melanzane, and dessert means a pistachio tiramisù. Groups of eight or more book a fixed sharing menu (€36 per person at weekday lunches and Sunday to Thursday dinners), with an 80cm pizza al metro and a big carbonara, and the whole restaurant or either floor can be hired for private events of 26 guests or more.
