Maestro Churrero is a churrería and chocolatería on Plaza de Jacinto Benavente, between Sol and the Barrio de las Letras, with a Repsol Solete. The family's churro-making goes back to 1902, when Don Florencio fried churros on the corner of Atocha and the Paseo del Prado; this shop opened in 1982. Beyond churros, porras and thick chocolate there are filled churros, Churro Bites and gluten-free churros.

Background

About Maestro Churrero

The Story

The family story starts in 1902 with a young Don Florencio frying churros on the corner of Calle de Atocha and the Paseo del Prado. The first shop opened in 1982 on Plaza de Jacinto Benavente, run by Don Galo and Doña Ana, and in 2004 the Maestro Churrero brand was created under Joaquín Gorrachategui. The fourth generation now runs it, keeping the classic churros, porras and chocolate while building a whole range of newer formats around them. There's a second shop on Carrera de San Jerónimo.

The Cuisine

Churros (thin, crisp outside and tender inside), porras (thicker and spongier) and hot chocolate are the base. Around them: Churros Golosos filled with cream, cinnamon and lemon, dulce de leche, chocolate or vanilla; Churro Bites dipped in chocolate, dulce de leche or Nutella; a 'castizo' churro filled with anise cream; churro 'makis' with a chocolate sauce; colourful mini churros; and gluten-free churros.

Getting There

Plaza de Jacinto Benavente 2, where Calle de Atocha begins, between Puerta del Sol and the Barrio de las Letras; Tirso de Molina (L1) and Sol are the nearest metro stations. The second shop is at Carrera de San Jerónimo 9.

Nearby

Sol is the dead centre of the city and behaves like it, busy and walked through by everyone heading somewhere else. The trick is knowing which doors are worth stopping at, because rooms built for visitors sit right beside ones locals have used for decades. Círculo de Bellas Artes and Edificio Metrópolis mark the smarter edge, towards Chueca.
