Chocolatería de San Ginés has made chocolate con churros in the Pasadizo de San Ginés, just off Sol, since 1894. It never closes, so it's a breakfast stop, an afternoon merienda and, by Madrid tradition, the last stop after a night out. It's on the Ayuntamiento's Comercios Centenarios register and holds the Comunidad de Madrid's Establecimiento Centenario designation.

Background

About Chocolatería de San Ginés

The Story

The building went up in 1890 as an inn and lodging house, and in 1894 it became a churrería making churros by the traditional 'a hombro' method. During the Second Republic, tucked between passages, it was nicknamed 'La Escondida'. The arch linking it to the San Ginés church appears in Benito Pérez Galdós's Episodios Nacionales. Demand has since spread it into several premises around the passage, including one opposite on the corner of Calle Coloreros.

The Cuisine

Chocolate con churros, the traditional pairing: thick drinking chocolate for dipping, churros and porras, with special chocolates with cream or coffee. The carta is published as a PDF on the venue's own site.

How to Book Chocolatería de San Ginés

Experience

Chocolatería de San Ginés Dining Experience

It feels like a late-19th-century café: two floors of white marble tables and a tiled counter, plus a terrace in the passage. Being by Puerta del Sol, it's where many Madrileños take the first chocolate of the new year, so expect company at busy times.

Getting There

Pasadizo de San Ginés 3 y 5, in Sol, in the Centro district, a short passage between Calle del Arenal and the San Ginés church.

Nearby

Sol is the dead centre of the city and behaves like it, busy and walked through by everyone heading somewhere else. The trick is knowing which doors are worth stopping at, because rooms built for visitors sit right beside ones locals have used for decades. Círculo de Bellas Artes and Edificio Metrópolis mark the smarter edge, towards Chueca.
