Background
About Chocolatería 1902
The Story
The family trade goes back to 1902, when Florencio opened a simple churrería on Calle Ave María and taught the craft to Félix and his grandson Galo. The business then took to Madrid's streets, selling churros and porras from a home-built stove that heated the oil with wood and coal, and with Ana and the children the family worked its way into the city's hospitality trade. Chocolatería 1902, formerly called Los Artesanos 1902, was created by Galo's son Gabi, a fourth-generation churrero, with his wife Carmen and their children, who now run it as the fifth generation; Juan Gabriel and Héctor make the chocolate to the family formula.
The Cuisine
Churros, porras and drinking chocolate, all made by hand. The chocolate is blended from three cacaos sourced in South America. Dietary versions run to gluten-free, lactose-free, sugar-free and vegan, including gluten-free churros.

Chocolatería 1902 Dining Experience
This is a churrería rather than a restaurant, and it runs on the churro clock: very early mornings, afternoon merienda, and a late shift. The chocolate is made in house rather than bought in, which is more or less the whole point of the place.
