Background

About Los Torreznos

The Story

The Blázquez family came to Madrid from Ávila in 1956 and brought their province's torrezno recipe with them. Their first bar, on Calle Goya next to what is now the Movistar Arena (the old Palacio de los Deportes), was known as Bar Blázquez, and the crowds that came for the torreznos at aperitivo time and on event days ended up renaming it: it officially became Los Torreznos. Three generations on there are three bars, Goya, López de Hoyos (Prosperidad) and Alonso Cano (Chamberí), plus a takeaway shop and deli on Calle Maiquez, and the house says the torreznos are still made the way they were on the first day.

The Cuisine

Castilian bar food built around torreznos in the Ávila style: crisp skin, juicy meat, cut and served fast. At Goya they come as a €3.10 pincho, in tacos with pico de gallo, with huevos rotos, in a bocadillo or over patatas revolconas. Around them are classic pinchos (chorizo de olla, ham croquettes, Burgos morcilla, battered cod), cold raciones like ensaladilla, boquerones and Don Bocarte anchovies, and hot ones from oreja and calamares to pulpo a la gallega.

Experience

Los Torreznos Dining Experience

A neighbourhood bar that never stopped being one: quick, close service at the counter, cañas and torreznos, a match on the screen and a terrace outside. It gets very busy before and after events at the arena next door.

Nearby

Goya is Salamanca with the volume turned down, a shopping-and-lunching grid where the standards are high and the rooms are comfortable. The eating is broad and dependable rather than experimental. Parque del Buen Retiro is close enough to build a day around.
