Background

About Casa Macareno

The Story

The premises at San Vicente Ferrer 44, near Plaza del Dos de Mayo, have been a bar since 1920, and the tiles on the facade and across the walls still say so. The taberna passed through several owners until it closed in 2015. A year later, in February 2016, hospitality veterans Pepe Roch, Julián Lara and Sergio Ochoa restored it, kept the tiles and the marble bar, and reopened it under its current name, aiming to bring back the spirit of the old tabernas castizas and casas de comidas. It holds a Repsol Solete.

The Cuisine

Traditional Spanish taberna cooking built for sharing. The croquetas, of ibérico ham and truffle, sit alongside patatas bravas, huevos rotos and carrillera. The house also lists a falso risotto of carabinero prawn and slow-cooked lamb, the ibérico ham is cut to order, and a small tapa arrives with your beer. The carta PDF on the venue's own site is dated 2024, so check it's still the current card.

Experience

Casa Macareno Dining Experience

Lively enough that you'll raise your voice, cosy enough that nobody minds. Service is warm and the room reads casual and traditional rather than done up. Continuous service from 12:30 to 01:30 Tuesday to Sunday means there's no shuttered afternoon, which is why a lunch here has a habit of turning into something else.
