Background
About Izarra
The Story
Izarra was founded in 1974 by Juan Gonzalez Arellano and his wife Carmen Arellano, who started it as a wine bar with small dishes cooked according to Navarrese tradition. Within a few years, customer demand transformed it into a full restaurant specialising in northern Spanish grill cuisine. Now in its second generation, siblings Alberto Gonzalez and Carmen Gonzalez run the operation. One of the very few restaurants from the 1970s Eixample dining scene that has survived.
The Cuisine
The kitchen team continues the Navarrese home-cooking tradition established by founder Carmen Arellano. The chuleton de buey a la parrilla is the flagship dish. Traditional spoon dishes include alubias de Puente la Reina, callos, and Thursday chickpeas. Seafood highlights are kokotxas de merluza al pil pil and tronco de merluza. Menestra de verduras and seasonal artichoke preparations showcase market vegetables. Around 50 EUR per person without drinks.
The Team
The kitchen team is led by the second generation of the Gonzalez family. Founded by Juan Gonzalez Arellano and Carmen Arellano in 1974, now run by their children Alberto and Carmen Gonzalez.
