Galú is an Italian restaurant with Sicilian roots in la Dreta de l'Eixample, opened by chef Niko Scimone with his wife Michelle Geitgey. Scimone, born in Palermo, returned to Barcelona after cooking in London and the United States. The kitchen makes pasta, bread, and desserts in-house.

Background

About Galú

The Story

Galú is the personal restaurant of chef Niko Scimone, opened with his wife Michelle Geitgey in la Dreta de l'Eixample. The name combines the names of their two daughters, Gala and Lucía. Scimone, born in Palermo in 1988, returned to Barcelona to launch the restaurant after cooking stints in London, Cleveland, and Nashville, and an appearance on the Food Network channel. The Sicilian pinecone, a traditional doorway symbol of warmth and hospitality, serves as the restaurant's emblem and signals the kitchen's regional identity. The space is laid out across two floors, with an upstairs area used for larger groups.

The Cuisine

The kitchen is Italian with Sicilian roots. Pasta, bread, and desserts are made in-house each day, with bread doughs given long fermentations. Sourcing leans on Sicilian products where possible, including Nocellara olives and southern Italian wines. The menu sits in the comfort range of southern Italian cooking: caponata Siciliana, carciofi alla piastra (grilled artichokes), melanzane alla parmigiana, pappardelle alla Norcia with sausage and black truffle, spaghettoni alle vongole, pollo al Marsala, and a made-to-order Sicilian cannolo to finish. Gluten-free and vegetarian dishes are part of the regular offer.

The Team

Chef and co-owner Niko Scimone leads the kitchen. He grew up in Palermo, started cooking professionally as a teenager, and built his career across Italy, London (La Tasca), and the United States, including time in Cleveland and Nashville, where his cooking at Italian restaurant Tartuffo drew attention from music industry figures and led to an appearance on the Food Network channel. His wife Michelle Geitgey, an American, runs the dining room and front of house, giving Galú the feel of a family-run trattoria rather than a chef-driven project.
