Background

About El Camarote de Tomás

The Story

El Camarote de Tomás takes its name from its founder, Tomás, who opened it with his partner Montse in Poble Sec more than 25 years ago. When the founding couple retired, Josep Ribot in the kitchen and Núria Espallargas in the dining room took over and have kept everything that made the original work: no menu card, a large product showcase at the entrance, and the same loyalty from the neighbourhood that made Tomás a fixture. Google's 4.7 from 376 reviews suggests the transition was seamless.

The Cuisine

A no-menu seafood kitchen built around what is freshest each day. The product display at the entrance, a large showcase of the day's fish and shellfish, is both the menu and the welcome. The restaurant's own description is spare: 'marisc a la planxa, peix al forn, entrants amb pocs més passos' (shellfish on the plancha, fish in the oven, starters with only a few more steps). The printed carta lists oysters, percebes, scallops, cockles, clams, razor clams, sea snails, Palamós red prawns, scampi, carabineros and daily fish (sea bass, bream, turbot, scorpionfish) priced per kilo, alongside a tomahawk for two and a 'Camarote mix seafood' grill platter for two.

The Team

El Camarote de Tomás is run by chef Josep Ribot in the kitchen and Núria Espallargas in the dining room, the second generation to run the restaurant after founders Tomás and Montse retired. The transition has maintained the quality and neighbourhood identity that made the original restaurant a fixture in Poble Sec.

Experience

El Camarote de Tomás Dining Experience

A neighbourhood seafood restaurant with a warm, casual feel, Macarfi tags it 'Aquí comen los locales' tag (locals eat here) captures the identity precisely. The product showcase at the entrance sets the tone: this is about what arrived this morning, not a fixed menu experience. Review mining: 'casual, intimate, cozy'; 'service warm, attentive'; 'walk-in friendly, doesn't rush you'. A hidden gem identity confirmed by both the review mining and the Poble Sec regulars who fill it.

Nearby

El Poble Sec is a dense residential neighbourhood on the southern slopes of Montjuïc, between the Paral·lel avenue and the mountain. The neighbourhood has been one of Barcelona's most active dining destinations in the past decade, the stretch of Carrer de Blai (famous for its pintxos bars) and the concentration of independent restaurants around Carrer de Lleida and the Mercat de Sant Antoni area have made it a consistent destination. Locals from across the city come to eat in Poble Sec; the tourist-to-local ratio remains lower than in the Born or the Gothic Quarter.
