Casa Alfonso
Casa Alfonso is a historic tapas tavern and colmado gourmet on Carrer de Roger de Lluria in L'Eixample, founded in 1934 and now run by the third and fourth generations of the founding family.
Background
About Casa Alfonso
The Story
Casa Alfonso opened in 1934, founded by great-grandfather Alfonso and great-grandmother Rosario. Originally a colmado (grocery shop) specialising in Iberian products, it evolved over four generations into one of Barcelona's emblematic tapas taverns. The space was converted from a former tannery, and in the 1970s a regular customer inspired the introduction of the flauta sandwich -- the first time this thin baguette format appeared in Barcelona. Today the third generation, Alfonso García, runs the business alongside his daughters Claudia and Lucía, who represent the fourth generation.
The Cuisine
The kitchen is rooted in traditional Spanish tapas and charcuterie, described by the house as slow, homemade "chup-chup" cooking. Signature dishes include fried olives (a long-standing house speciality), a rotation of croquetas, iberian ham cut to order, steak tartare, artichoke with foie, and daily market suggestions alongside weekly staples such as fish, legumes, and homemade macaroni. The attached colmado gourmet sells iberian products and organic pantry goods to take away. Around 45 EUR per person without drinks.
The Team
Alfonso García is the third-generation owner, who took over the business in the 1980s and transformed it from a pure colmado into the historic tavern and gourmet grocer it is today. His daughters Claudia and Lucía represent the fourth generation working in the house. Alfonso prefers the title tabernero over chef, reflecting the informal, hospitality-first character the family has maintained across four generations.

Casa Alfonso Dining Experience
A 1930s-era historic tavern with the aesthetic of an old charcuterie and bistro. Worn wooden walls, marble counters and tables, framed pictures, and hanging jamones ibéricos over the bar. The space preserves much of the original furniture from the period. A small terrace offers outdoor seating. The attached colmado gourmet sells iberian products and pantry goods. The atmosphere is lively and informal, with staff who welcome customers as family.
