Square
Plaça de Catalunya
A large public square of roughly 50,000 square metres at the centre of Barcelona, marking the meeting point between the historic old city and the 19th-century Eixample. Conceived as part of an 1859 urban plan, it was urbanized around 1902 and redesigned by architect Francesc de Paula Nebot for the 1929 International Exposition. Several of the city's main thoroughfares converge here — Passeig de Gràcia, La Rambla, Rambla de Catalunya and Portal de l'Àngel — making it Barcelona's principal hub.
