El Nacional is a 2,600 m² gastronomic food hall inside a restored 1889 garage on Passeig de Gràcia, organised as four sit-down restaurants and four specialised bars under a single modernist vaulted canopy.

Background

About El Nacional

The Story

El Nacional opened in 2014 inside a 2,600 m² former garage on Passeig de Gràcia, a building that had previously housed a café-theatre, a dye factory and a pre-Civil War car dealership. The venue was conceived as Barcelona's first multi-space gastronomic food hall: four sit-down restaurants and four specialised bars under one vaulted modernist canopy, each focused on a different corner of Iberian cooking. Diners move freely between spaces, ordering rice and fish at one counter, charcoal-grilled meat at another, and oysters or cocktails at a bar.

The Cuisine

The offer is organised by technique and ingredient rather than by fixed menus. La Llotja handles market fish, paellas and shellfish from the house lonja-style display. La Braseria works the charcoal grill and oven with aged beef and Iberian meats. La Taperia sends out classic Spanish tapas from bravas and croquetas to bomba de la Barceloneta. La Parada offers quick, lighter plates, grain bowls, cocas, salads and cakes. The four bars specialise in cava and beer with conservas, wine with Iberian charcuterie, oysters with champagne, and cocktails.

The Team

El Nacional runs as a collective kitchen with dedicated teams for each of the four restaurants and four bars, each space led by its own chef and service crew. The house sources aged beef (30- and 60-day maturation), acorn-fed Iberian pork from Guijuelo, fish from Mediterranean lonjas, and oysters from Asturias, Galicia, Bouzigues and Brittany.
