Background

About Can Culleres

The Story

Can Culleres opened in 2021 by chef Jordi Asensio and his partner Patricia Nieves, both Poblenou natives. The name pays homage to Metales y Plateria Ribera, a silverware factory in Poblenou popularly known as Can Culleres (House of Spoons), where Patricia's grandfather worked in the 1960s. The restaurant was conceived as a return to their roots, honouring the neighbourhood's industrial working-class identity with a creative kitchen rooted in Catalan tradition.

The Cuisine

Chef Jordi Asensio trained at Martin Berasategui, Pierre Gagnaire, and Mugaritz (Andoni Luis Aduriz) before returning to his Poblenou neighbourhood. The kitchen serves modern Mediterranean cuisine with a traditional Catalan base in an intimate neighbourhood setting. Signature dishes include canelones de rostit with truffle bechamel, seafood rice with carabinero and saffron aioli, morro de bacalao a la llauna with judias de Santa Pau, steak tartare with foie gras shavings, monkfish meatballs, and broad beans with egg and guanciale. The bar serves tapas and cocktails.

The Team

Chef Jordi Asensio co-owns and leads the kitchen, while Patricia Nieves manages front-of-house. Asensio was a finalist for Chef of the Year and Sustainable Chef at the Forum Gastronomic de Girona 2023. The restaurant partners with Brots Ecosocial, a social integration project, and is listed in the Slow Food Barcelona guide.
