Betlem occupies an 1892 former colmado on the chamfered corner of Carrer de Girona and Mallorca, reopened in 2011 as a gastrobar by Víctor Ferrer, the previous owners' nephew.

Background

About Betlem

The Story

Betlem was founded in 1892 as a colmado on the chamfered corner of Carrer de Girona and Carrer de Mallorca, the same corner where Salvador Puig Antich was arrested in 1973. The grocery store closed in September 2011, when Víctor Ferrer, nephew of the former owners, reopened it as a gastrobar he calls a "miscelánea gastronómica." The refurbishment preserved the original cupboards, now filled with wine bottles, and added a small upstairs private room for groups of four to ten.

The Cuisine

The carta is built around tapas, raciones, small plates and gourmet bocadillos, with daily specials written on a chalkboard and a stated preference for stews. Signature dishes include patatas bravas with spicy romesco, Andalusian-style fried squid, veal cheeks in red wine, ceps-and-botifarra-negra tortilla, and fried eggs with Iberian ham. Breakfast service runs from 9:00, and drinks continue until 01:30 Thursday through Saturday.

The Team

Owner-chef Víctor Ferrer trained with Alain Ducasse and Santi Santamaria before converting his family's colmado into Betlem. The restaurant is part of Grup Confiteria, the Barcelona hospitality group co-founded by Enric Rebordosa and Lito Baldovinos, which also runs Paradiso, Dr. Stravinsky, La Confiteria, Café del Centre, Bar Michigan and Ultramarinos Marín among others.
