The Story
Bar Vint-i-Quatre opened in November 2024 at the corner of Avinguda Diagonal and Carrer de Tuset, taking over what was previously the uptown branch of chef Carles Abellán's iconic Tapas 24. The new project is a reinvention of that same format - traditional tapas re-read through Abellán's elBulli pedigree and Comerç 24 sensibility. The restaurant introduces itself with a line from Catalan poet J.V. Foix: 'm'exalta el nou i m'enamora el vell' - 'the new exalts us and we fall in love with the old'. The location, on the Diagonal-Tuset corner, sits right next to Barcelona's main uptown nightlife district.
The Cuisine
The kitchen divides into three registers: vermut-hour snacks (gildas, tinned conservas from Galicia and the Cantábrico, Payoyo cheese from the Cádiz mountains, anchovies in smoked butter), traditional tapas (Maldonado Iberian ham, 60-day aged Galician Rubia beef, ensaladilla rusa, bikini of Iberian ham and truffle, Catalan-style croquettes), and fuller sharing plates (tomato tartare, cod esqueixada with ganxet beans, grilled Barceloneta squid 'La Barra' style, fricandó with Xixona torró picada, Barcelona-style cannelloni). Raw ingredients are the anchor: Maldonado ham, 60-day-aged Galician beef, El Prat artichokes, Calaf eggs, Cal Rovira butifarras, Girona beef. The approach is classic Abellán - reverent to the traditional tapas format but with the ingredient sourcing and plating of his fine-dining past.
