The fourth Premis Gastronòmics Mallorca gala took place on Monday 26 October at the Auditòrium in Palma, and Zaranda took the best restaurant award. The evening was originally set for 19 October, but a storm pushed it back a week. About 1,000 guests came. PIMEM, Última Hora and Cadena SER organised it.

Zaranda wins best restaurant, and its chef wins best chef

Zaranda holds one MICHELIN star and one Repsol Sol. It serves tasting menus inside Hotel Es Princep in Palma's old quarter, in a dining room built over the remains of a former tannery. Chef Fernando Pérez Arellano started it in Madrid in 2005, moved it to Mallorca, and has run it through all three of its homes. He also took the best chef award on the night.

The rest of the Cocina y Gastronomía category went to people as well as places. Marga Coll got the lifetime achievement award. Rodolfo Antonelli of Voro was named best restaurant manager, and Jordi Cantó won young chef. Ca's Patró March in Deià won for traditional Mallorcan cuisine. Mallorca Magazin describes it as a restaurant on Cala Deià that's popular with holidaymakers and well-known guests alike.

Six bars, from variat to cocktails

The bar category went to six places, each for a different thing. Bodega Morey won for bar culture, Bar Casa Miss for its variat, Bar Plata for its llonguet and Sa Ximbomba Gènova for its pa amb oli. Bacan took specialty coffee, and Coquetier Cocktail Club took cocktails.

The variat ran through the whole night. It's a typical Mallorcan combination of several small dishes, and the comedians Carlitos Alcover and Pep Noguera kept steering the hosts back to it. A video about it was shown shortly before the close.

Wine, producers and a Sóller cook

The agrifood category, Promoción Agroalimentaria, rewards the people behind the plate. D.O. Binissalem won for patronage and sponsorship, and Koldo Royo for promoting Mallorcan gastronomy. Bodega 4 Kilos won best wine or winery, and Galletes d'Oli ARTÀsanes won for local product.

The honorary award closed the evening. It went to Toni Pinya, a cook, teacher and author from Sóller. Última Hora had said the name would only be revealed on the night. Mallorca Magazin says it drew some of the loudest applause, and that Pinya spoke of being in love with a dish called variat and with the produce of the market.

A seagrass trophy and a guest on video

Each trophy is a sculpture by the Mallorcan artist Ernesto Rodríguez, inspired by posidonia, the seagrass that grows in the Mediterranean. The chef David de Jorge, known as Robin Food, was billed as the special guest. He couldn't make the gala in person, so a video he'd recorded on the island that week was shown instead.
