Background
About Mesón Txistu
The Story
Mesón Txistu opened in 1972 and is associated with Pedro Ábrego, the name also behind Asador Donostiarra. The main dining room is where it all began, and three refurbishments and nearly 50 years on, the house says it keeps the essence of the first day; the fireplace room was its first expansion.
The Cuisine
Traditional Basque asador cooking. To share there's bellota ham, Idiazábal, Cantabrian anchovies, homemade goose foie, croquetas, baby squid and clams. Fish runs from grilled bacalao, hake tail or cogote and kokotxas al pil pil (€47.50) to merluza a la vasca, monkfish in green sauce and txangurro; meat from old-cow solomillo and entrecôte to the chuletón for two (€79).
Rooms and menus
The main room seats 150, the fireplace room 55, the upper room 50 and the terrace 65. For groups there are 2026 tasting menus at €70, €80 and €88 per person plus VAT, with wine included.

On Plaza de Ángel Carbajo in the Castillejos area of Madrid's Tetuán district, a short walk from the Paseo de la Castellana.
Nearby
Castillejos is northern, plain and residential, and the restaurants are the reason to be there rather than the scenery. The cooking is honest and regional, at prices that would be higher further south. Estadio Santiago Bernabéu and Cuatro Torres Business Area loom over the whole area.
