Background
About Asador Donostiarra
The Story
Pedro Abrego opened Asador Donostiarra in 1976, four years after founding Mesón Txistu a few metres along the same street, with the aim of sharing Basque food culture in Madrid. The two still share a founder and a kitchen, and when the asador takes its summer break, Mesón Txistu stays open. Abrego's motto, quoted on the house website, is that nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Today the asador opens 363 days a year, with a terrace for summer and winter and four private rooms, and it was adapted for disabled access in 2018.
The Cuisine
Traditional Basque grill-house cooking: the txuletón de vaca vieja, an aged-beef chop for two off the grill, kokotxas de merluza al pil-pil, txangurro a la donostiarra, bacalao a la bilbaína or a la vizcaína, a mixed fish grill a la bilbaína and suckling pig roasted in the oven, with set menus as well as the carta and the house's own beer.
Menus and Private Rooms
Beyond the carta there are set menus for the year and for Christmas, and a 'build your own menu' option for groups, served in four private rooms of different sizes. It's a big, traditional room, popular for business lunches and celebrations, and it has hosted plenty of athletes and public figures over the years.
Practicalities
Lunch and dinner Monday to Saturday (13:15 to 16:00 and 20:30 to 23:30) and Sunday lunch; it usually closes for a summer break from late July to mid-August, when Mesón Txistu covers. Book by email or phone on 915 79 08 71. Tetuán and Estrecho are the nearest metro stations.

On Calle Infanta Mercedes 79, in the Castillejos area of Madrid's Tetuán district.
Nearby
Castillejos is northern, plain and residential, and the restaurants are the reason to be there rather than the scenery. The cooking is honest and regional, at prices that would be higher further south. Estadio Santiago Bernabéu and Cuatro Torres Business Area loom over the whole area.
