About La Maruca Castellana
The Story
La Maruca Castellana is one of the four Madrid houses of La Maruca, the brand of Grupo Cañadío, the Santander group that began with Cañadío in 1981 and whose founder Paco Quirós brought the northern kitchen to Madrid. The first Madrid Maruca opened on Velázquez in 2013; the others are here on the Castellana, on López de Hoyos and in Azca. This one sits at Paseo de la Castellana 212, up in Nueva España near Plaza de Castilla. It's homey and low-lit, has a terrace, takes families and groups, and it's recommended in the Michelin Guide.
The Cuisine
Cantabrian cooking for sharing, the same group classics as the other Marucas: Cantabrian anchovies with roast peppers (€15 for the 3/8 tin), the house ensaladilla, a home-made foie terrine with toasted sobao, croquetas of cocido meat, bonito empanadillas 'like Angélica's', Santander rabas, the La Maruca bravas and huevos rotos with Potes picadillo. The spoon section has cocido montañés of beans and cabbage, a Cocido Lebaniego served in a single pour, a two-stage fish soup and black fideuá of Santander cuttlefish.
Fish, Meat and the 1981 Desserts
Fish mains are €25: cod with tomato 'as always', grilled octopus with a matanza purée, bonito with piperrada, grilled hake loin with refrito, the original merluza 'de rula' and chipirones with fideuá in their ink. On the meat side there are stewed veal meatballs, callos a la montañesa, Ibérico pork with Cabrales, boneless roast lamb with panadera potatoes, a heifer tartare and a San Jacobo of Potes loin, from €19 to €23.50. Desserts are €8.50 to €9, and three carry the date 1981, when the first Cañadío opened in Santander: the lemon tart, the rice pudding and the Cañadío cheesecake. The carta flags which dishes are safe for coeliacs and which can be adapted, and there's a separate allergen carta.
All-Day Hours
The doors open at 08:00 on weekdays and 09:30 at weekends and holidays, with a breakfast carta, and stay open until 01:00. The kitchen serves lunch from 13:00 to 16:00 (16:30 from Friday to Sunday) and dinner from 20:00 to 23:00, every day. The nearest metro stations are Plaza de Castilla and Cuzco.

Paseo de la Castellana 212, in Nueva España, comfortable northern Madrid: residential, well off, and full of dining rooms built for repeat custom.
Nearby
Nueva España is northern, residential and thoroughly un-touristed, which is exactly why the cooking is worth the trip. The rooms here answer to regulars, and the standard is higher than the setting suggests. Estadio Santiago Bernabéu and Cuatro Torres Business Area are the fixed points on the skyline.
