Background

About Hermanos Míguez

The Story

Hermanos Míguez opened in 1973, founded by Arturo Míguez's father and uncle; his mother Josefa later took over, and now that she has retired, Arturo runs it. Half a century on it is still what a 1970s casa de comidas was meant to be: popular, friendly and simple, a place where you feel at home and eat well for little money, and a neighbourhood institution near the Casa de Campo entrance.

The Cuisine

Traditional home cooking from the centre of Spain: soups, pulses, vegetables, stews, meat and fish. Each weekday has its star first course: lentils on Monday, cocido on Tuesday, paella on Wednesday, callos on Thursday and chickpea potaje on Friday, alongside judiones de La Granja, sopa castellana, arroz caldoso, arroz a la cubana and seasonal vegetables (gazpacho and salads in summer). Mains include swordfish, boquerones, sea bass, trout, rabo de toro, churrasco, secreto ibérico, pork loin with fried eggs, calf's liver and homemade filetes rusos and san jacobos.

The Menú del Día

The menu is the whole point: around a dozen first courses, a dozen mains and some eight desserts (natillas, flan, crema catalana, rice pudding, cuajada, torrijas, ice cream and fruit), with bread and a drink, for €13 on weekdays and €18 on Sundays. Portions are generous, and it fills up, so arrive early or call ahead on 609 01 00 19.

Practicalities

Lunch only, 13:00 to 17:00, Sunday to Friday; closed on Saturdays. It's a few steps from Alto de Extremadura metro (L6), and there's paid parking nearby. Cards and contactless are accepted.
