Background

About Casa Pei Plus

The Story

Casa Pei Plus opened in September 2022 on Calle Espronceda, in Ríos Rosas. Pei is the family surname: the owners are a Chinese family of Korean ethnicity, and they built the place around two things, dumplings and specialty coffee. The mother makes the dumplings and the daughter, Guiyue Pei, runs the coffee and the small dining room.

The Cuisine

A short Korean-Chinese menu built on hand-made dumplings and wontons, steamed or fried, with soups and sides, plus specialty coffee.

What to Order

The menu is short on purpose. The dumplings come either steamed or griddled, with fillings such as beef and onion or pork and prawn, and everything is made by hand to order. Beyond them there are a couple of specials, soups and sides; the fried wonton stuffed with pork and finished with a Korean-style sauce is the dish that sums the place up, a crisp, spiced cross between Chinese and Korean cooking. A spring-roll salad with sweet-and-sour dressing mixes crunchy rolls through the leaves. Desserts are limited to a couple of options, such as mochi or a cheesecake, and the natural partner is a flat white from the coffee bar.

When to Go

It keeps daytime hours most of the week: Tuesday, Thursday and Friday it closes at 20:00, and only on Wednesday and Saturday does it stay open for dinner, until 22:30. It's closed on Sunday and Monday, and the family takes a summer break from late July to mid-August, so check its Instagram before making a special trip. The room is small and simple, which suits a quick lunch of dumplings and coffee more than a long dinner.

The Team

Run by a mother-and-daughter team: the mother makes the food, and her daughter Guiyue Pei handles the drinks and the small dining room.

Casa Pei Plus Dining Experience

Small and family-run, the mood here is homemade and unhurried rather than polished. A mother-and-daughter team makes the dumplings and wontons by hand behind a short Korean-Chinese menu, with specialty coffee served in the same modest dining room.

Getting There

On Calle Espronceda in Ríos Rosas, a residential grid in Chamberí, north of central Madrid.

Nearby

Ríos Rosas is a working residential grid north of the old centre, where restaurants answer to the people who live there rather than to visitors. It sits nearer Estadio Santiago Bernabéu than anything touristic, and the eating is unhurried, mid-priced and quietly confident. This is where you go for a proper lunch without theatre.
