Casa Manolo is a classic Madrid bar on Calle de Jovellanos, behind the Congreso de los Diputados and beside the Teatro de la Zarzuela, holding a Solete in the Guía Repsol. The croquetas are what it's known for, with churros at breakfast and callos, empanadillas and tortilla in callos sauce later on. Politicians drop in after parliamentary sessions. It's closed on Sundays and serves lunch only on Mondays.

Background

About Casa Manolo

The Story

The taberna at Calle de Jovellanos 7 opened in 1896 as Casa Isaac. In 1929 it was taken over by Manuel Seijo Salgado, a Galician emigrant who had gone to Cuba, met his wife there, sold the grocery of Spanish products he ran and came back to Madrid to make a living; everyone named their business after the family then, so it became Casa Manolo. It has stayed in the family for three generations, with grandson Alfredo Seijo now behind the bar, and it holds a Solete in the Guía Repsol.

The Cuisine

Castizo bar food. The croquetas are the house's calling card, the ham ones especially. At breakfast it's churros; later, callos, empanadillas, tortilla in callos sauce, ham, and a vermouth with a revuelto of salt cod and potatoes.

Castizo and busy, a traditional bar where the counter does most of the work. It sits right behind the Congreso, and the Guía Repsol notes that dozens of politicians have talked freely here over croquetas and a wine after question time. The Teatro de la Zarzuela is next door.

Getting There

Casa Manolo is at Calle de Jovellanos 7, in the Barrio de las Letras in Madrid's Centro district, right behind the Congreso de los Diputados and next to the Teatro de la Zarzuela.

Nearby

Barrio de las Letras is the old literary quarter, narrow and atmospheric, with quotations set into the paving. The eating is unusually varied for so small an area, from taverns and cocktail bars to kitchens working at a serious level. Museo del Prado and Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza are on the doorstep.
