Background

About La Violeta

The Story

La Violeta is an old Chamberí taberna on Calle de Vallehermoso that its fourth generation, Luis and Manuel, reopened as a vermutería. Neighbourhood lore puts the old Bodegas Jiménez here some sixty years ago, and the bottling machines are still in the basement. In the 1980s it became the first La Violeta, a bar of the Movida years whose back room welcomed the nightlife crowd of the time, and it passed through two more generations of the family before the vermouth bar. It holds a Repsol Solete and keeps a terrace, and it's the kind of neighbourhood counter where the vermouth is the reason to stop and the tapas are the reason to stay.

The Cuisine

The list runs to as many as 30 vermouths. The tapas are the classic partners: boquerones en vinagre, smoked anchovies, gildas and pickles, plus tostas and boards of ibéricos and cheese, with a free aperitivo alongside your glass.

La Violeta Dining Experience

The draw is the vermut counter and the tapas that come with it, in a genuinely local, unshowy taberna. There is a terrace, and it works well for a group.

Getting There

On Calle Vallehermoso at number 62, in the Arapiles barrio of Chamberi, an unshowy, residential stretch above the noise of the centre, with Malasana downhill and Templo de Debod the walk west.

Nearby

Arapiles is unshowy, residential and genuinely local, sitting just above the noise of the centre. The eating covers historic vermut counters and kitchens doing careful, seasonal work at fair prices. Malasaña is downhill, and Templo de Debod is the walk west.
