Taberna La Mina
Taberna La Mina
Taberna La Mina has been pouring cañas on Calle del General Álvarez de Castro, in the Trafalgar quarter of Chamberí, since 1949, and it holds a Solete in the Guía Repsol. The founder's grandson, Gonzalo, brought it back to life while keeping the marble bar, the old ceramic wine jars and the two dishes that made its name: grilled prawns and pinchos morunos. The rest of the order leans on the sea, with zamburiñas, navajas, boquerones and cazón, and there's a terrace out front.

Vuelta a casa.

Background
About Taberna La Mina
The Story
La Mina opened in 1949 in the heart of Chamberí and became the barrio's place for a caña with a plate of prawns. It later found new life under Gonzalo, the founder's grandson, who chose to change as little as possible: same prawns, same pinchos morunos, same cold beer. Today a new generation is at the helm, it holds a Solete in the Guía Repsol, and the name has grown to three addresses in Madrid.
The Cuisine
Spanish taberna cooking, more seafood-forward than most. Grilled prawns and pinchos morunos are the signatures, and the Guía Repsol singles out the gambas, boquerones and cazón. Diners also mention zamburiñas, navajas, salpicón, cockles, coquinas, white prawns and cocochas, with callos and calamares from the classic tapa list.

Taberna La Mina Dining Experience
An old taberna that never turned into a museum. The room is much as it was in the middle of the last century, with a gres floor, a classic marble counter and the big ceramic tinajas that once held wine sold by the jug, and you can eat standing at the bar by the door or sit at the tables inside. The crowd is the neighbourhood, younger than you might expect, with groups on the terrace and dogs welcome.

Get directions→Getting There
La Mina is on Calle del General Alvarez de Castro, in the Trafalgar quarter of the Chamberi district, a quiet residential pocket of central Madrid.
Nearby
Trafalgar is the calm shoulder between Malasaña and the wider avenues, residential enough to feel lived-in and central enough to walk out of. The eating skews to neighbourhood favourites and small confident kitchens rather than destinations. It gets quieter, and better value, the further you go from Gran Vía.
