Background

About Cervecería Alemana

The Story

La Alemana opened in 1904, when a group of German manufacturers set up a bar devoted to drinking beer at what was then number 7 of Plaza de Santa Ana. Its first adverts offered salmon, prawn, anchovy and sardine-paste sandwiches with El Águila beer. In 1924 Ramón González Peláez, an Asturian who had worked in bars along the Paseo de la Florida, took it over, and his family still runs it. A bullfighting fan, he made it a headquarters for the Dominguín and Bienvenida families, and writers like Valle-Inclán drank here too. Ava Gardner was a regular during her Madrid years, and Hemingway liked the table by the window. It carries the Ayuntamiento de Madrid's Comercio Centenario plaque and belongs to the Asociación de Restaurantes y Tabernas Centenarios de Madrid.

The Cuisine

A cervecería and tapas bar, cooked traditionally: ensaladilla rusa, bacalao, albóndigas, fried boquerones and callos, plus croquetas de jamón ibérico, pulpo a la gallega, patatas bravas and gambas al ajillo, bocadillos and German-style sausages like Bockwurst and Bratwurst.
