Background
About Asadero Miguel Ángel
The Story
This is a market business rather than a standalone restaurant: a family-run Ecuadorian counter spread across six units inside the Mercado de los Mostenses, off Gran Vía near Plaza de España, run by cook Miguel Ángel Méndez and his family. It specialises in chicken and meat over the coals, with oak charcoal, and in the dishes of Ecuador's coast, highlands and Amazon. After more than a decade in the market, it got a Solete when the Guía Repsol launched the category in 2021, among the first places in Madrid to receive one and the first traditional Ecuadorian restaurant to do so. The Guía Repsol sums it up as rich, cheap and plentiful.
The Cuisine
The venue describes its own cooking as South American, alongside home cooking, regional produce and traditional dishes, from an asador, cervecería and cafetería under one roof. Guía Repsol describes it as the Ecuadorian cooking of Miguel Ángel Méndez, and diners bear that out: the encebollado is the dish they mention most, then the ceviche, the secos, fish soup, caldo and fried fish, with a menú del día and generous portions. There are ice creams, pastries and desserts too, plus wine, coffee and fresh juice.

Asadero Miguel Ángel Dining Experience
It's a market-hall operation rather than a dining room, and the mood follows the market: counter trade from early, a heated terrace, air conditioning and free wifi, all of which the venue lists itself. Its own page describes a calm setting that runs from breakfast through to dinner.

Nearby
Malasaña is where the city keeps its energy, a tight web of streets that turns over fast and stays up late. The eating is young and restless, with vegan kitchens, coffee bars and creative rooms wedged between places that have not changed in decades. It runs down to Gran Vía, and it rewards walking without a plan.
