Background
About Xarcuteria La Pineda
The Story
Xarcuteria La Pineda was founded in 1904 on Carrer del Pi, in the medieval heart of Barcelona's Gothic Quarter. For its first decades it was run by the Verdaguer family, until 1930 when Florenci Mir acquired the business alongside his wife, his brother Pedro and his sister-in-law. The Mir family has run it ever since. After Florenci's death in 1994, his nephew Pedro Mir Rodes took over, and the current generation continues to travel personally each year to select the jamón pieces that make up the house's private selection. The shop is listed in Barcelona's Ruta dels Emblemàtics (the city's heritage registry of historic establishments) and the original interior has been carefully preserved: marble counter, an authentic Berkel slicer for cured meats, antique cash register, low ceilings, tile mosaics, and shelves lined with conservas.
The Cuisine
La Pineda is first and foremost a charcuterie: Iberian cured meats from the four DO origins of 100% acorn-fed jamón ibérico (Jabugo, Guijuelo, Dehesa de Extremadura, Los Pedroches), with pieces aged up to five years. Every ham the house sells is from its own private selection, chosen in person by the family each year. Beyond the hams, the shop stocks a curated selection of embutidos (sobrasada, chorizo, lomo), Spanish and international cheeses, tinned conservas (ultramarinos), and wines. A small range of bocadillos - both cold and hot - is served over the counter, combining the shop's own hams, cheeses and cured sausages. The house specialises in degustación (tasting boards) and offers free hand-slicing service by expert cortadores on every ham sold.
The Team
The Mir family has run La Pineda since 1930. Founder Florenci Mir bought the shop from the Verdaguer family alongside his wife and his brother Pedro. After Florenci's death in 1994, his nephew Pedro Mir Rodes took over, and the family's fourth-generation custodians now travel each year to select jamón for the house's private line. The staff are trained ham cutters in the classic Spanish corte a cuchillo style. The service model combines retail charcuterie with in-shop tasting - expert cortadores explain every cut as it is sliced.

Is Xarcuteria La Pineda a restaurant or a shop?
+
Both. It functions as a retail charcuterie selling Iberian ham, cheese, wine and conserves to take home, and also as a stand-up vermut counter where you can eat what you buy on the spot. There are no traditional tables; most customers stand at the counter with a plate and a glass.
What should I order at Xarcuteria La Pineda?
+
Order a plate of hand-sliced jamón ibérico de bellota 100% - the shop carries all four DO origins (Jabugo, Guijuelo, Dehesa de Extremadura, Los Pedroches), all from the family's private selection and carved to order by expert cortadores free of charge. Add a wedge of Spanish or international cheese, a cured sausage (sobrasada, fuet, chorizo or lomo), bread and one of the house wines or vermuts. The shop also makes bocadillos - cold and hot - combining the same hams, cheeses and embutidos.
