Italian chef Stefano Mazza runs Last Monkey, a tiny Sant Antoni tapas bar whose four-square-metre kitchen turns out punchy pan-Asian small plates for sharing.

Background

About Last Monkey

The Story

Last Monkey is the personal project of Italian chef Stefano Mazza, who spent years as a graphic designer in Milan and at Barcelona's TV3 before turning to cooking. After a first venture with an Italian concept in Sant Gervasi, he opened Last Monkey on Comte Borrell with a tight focus on Asian small plates served tapas-style. The kitchen is famously small, around four square metres, but the output is ambitious and precise.

The Cuisine

The menu is short and built for sharing, inspired by flavours from across Asia with occasional Italian and Mediterranean touches. Best-sellers include La Berenjena (Chinese eggplant confit in soy and oil with sweet chili) and the Monkey Bowl (basmati rice with confit eggplant and four-hour pulled pork). The kitchen leans into spice, curries and vegetables, with standout dishes like Korean-style tartar, Caesar gyozas, butter chicken brioche and Beef Rendang finished with spicy Italian 'nduja oil. Pairings run from local wines to well-pulled beers and Asian-inspired cocktails.

The Team

Chef-owner Stefano Mazza runs the kitchen and front of house with a small team. His background outside hospitality shows in the restaurant's visual identity and tightly edited menu, while his cooking has earned praise from, La Vanguardia and El Periódico for punching well above its size.

How to Book Last Monkey

Booking

Last Monkey operates a compact schedule, Wednesday through Saturday, lunch and dinner, inside a tiny dining room with a kitchen of roughly 4 square metres. Seats fill quickly, so advance reservations are strongly recommended, especially for weekends. Walk-ins may be possible at the bar but are not guaranteed.

Experience

Last Monkey Dining Experience

Last Monkey is a deliberately tiny, high-energy dining room in Sant Antoni, warm neon lighting, a long marble counter and an open kitchen barely larger than a walk-in closet. The mood is casual and loud, with a bar-style informality that suits the tapas format. The food does the heavy lifting, and the room feels like an extension of Chef Mazza's own personality.

The area keeps a residential, local feel while drawing food-focused visitors from across the city.
