Background
About La Esquinica
The Story
La Esquinica opened in August 1972 as a small tapas bar in el Turó de la Peira, run by a team of six on the corner of carrer Montsant and carrer Cadí. The bar's name is a diminutive of that corner spot. In 1997 it moved to a larger space on Passeig de Fabra i Puig with room for a terrace, and it has since become one of the city's best-known tapas destinations, with long waits on busy nights.
The Cuisine
The kitchen runs a menu of more than fifty tapas with a distinct Aragonese accent, led by the patatas bravas that the bar is best known for. The dish names are written in the Aragonese diminutive form (pataticas bravicas, chipironcicos, bombicas), a linguistic signature the founders brought with them from Teruel. Alongside bravas, the bar turns out fried squid and baby cuttlefish, Galician octopus, Cantabrian anchovies, Navarrese chistorra, Teruel ham, and grilled razor clams.
The Team
La Esquinica is family-run. The founding brothers came from Teruel in Aragón, and the bar remains committed to the close, informal service style it opened with in 1972.
